The Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) will hold the 72nd edition of its Annual Meeting entirely online, between September and December, in the first week of each month, with occasional activities throughout the months. The decision was made in view of the uncertainties about the coronavirus pandemic and the continuation of social isolation measures as the most efficient measure currently available to contain the spread of covid-19.

With the theme “Science, Education and Sustainable Development for the 21st Century”, the extended and virtual version of the SBPC 72nd Annual Meeting is held in partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The event takes place in September (1 to 5), October (5 to 10), November (3 to 7) and December (11/30 to 5/12).

The program will include conferences, panels, cultural activities, WEBMinicourses and poster session, always during these weeks. Particularly on Saturdays of each month, “SBPC Jovem e Família” activities will be held, with attractions for all ages. The activities will be broadcast  on the SBPC YouTube channel . All information about the 72nd Annual Meeting is available on the event's website:  http://ra.sbpcnet.org.br/72RA/ .

The first cycle of the event, which will take place from the 1st to the 5th of September, is  already available on the website  and will count with the participation of important scientists from all areas of knowledge. Four conferences will be offered, with topics such as "What is spintronics", "Coronavirus: from biology to treatment and prevention", "The importance of dreams" and "Indigenous peoples in Brazil". The event will also promote the panel “Science of the sea: heritage for the future”, and the round tables “Sustainable uses of Amazonian biodiversity”, “Sleep and health of the young generation. The impact of new technologies on the quality of sleep and life ”and“ Secular state under attack: education, health, human rights ”.

The panels and round tables promoted by SBPC will be held from 12 pm to 2 pm, and the conferences, at 6 pm.

SBPC affiliated societies will also promote round tables and conferences. In this first cycle, the Brazilian Astronomical Society (SAB), Brazilian Metrology Society (SBM) and Brazilian Mathematics Education Society (SBEM) will hold two conferences and a panel. See the full schedule here .

On September 2, Wednesday, from 10 am to 11 am, SAB will hold the conference “The big questions of astronomy in the 21st century”. Also on the 2nd, ANPG (National Association of Graduate Students) will promote the panel “Anísio Teixeira Emergency Plan: the role of young researchers in the reconstruction of Brazil”, at 3 pm. Thursday, 3/09, SBM promotes the conference “Bioengineering and biprinting: metrology to expand innovation”. On Friday, SBEM will present the round table “Scientific dissemination, technologies and mathematical education for human development”, from 3 pm to 5 pm. All transmission links will be available on the event website ( http://ra.sbpcnet.org.br/72RA ).

Among the activities of SBPC Jovem e Família, on Saturday, the launch of a space hackathon, the Statistical Tent, video contests, Engineering workshop, virtual visits to museums and many scientific experiments to do at home are scheduled.

And during the weeks of scientific programming, daily activities will end with SBPC Cultural attractions, which will bring  music, dance, theater and cinema to the  SBPC YouTube channel , from Tuesday to Friday, from 7:30 pm.

WEBMinicursos: pay attention to deadlines!

Those interested in participating in the WEBMinicourses that will be held in the first week of September have until the next 09/09 (Thursday), to register.

The program includes activities such as, for example, “Light, its nature, interaction with matter and applications”, “How to prepare, evaluate, publish and disseminate a scientific article”, “Rumors, lies, misinformation and science”, and “ Entrepreneurial science: taking your research from the bench to the market ”.  The complete list of online mini courses is available at this link .

WEBMinicursos will have six hours of video lessons recorded and made available from August 31 to September 8, and two hours of live class, through Moodle, on a specific date, in the week from September 9 to 11. Each mini-course has a workload of eight hours, with the right to a certificate of attendance for those who attend all recorded classes and the live class.
